Upshur County Schools partners with St. Joseph’s Hospital to offer exploratory healthcare experience

BUCKHANNON — On Thursday, April 28th, Buckhannon-Upshur High School 11th- and 12th-grade students learned about an option for exploratory healthcare provided by St. Joseph’s Hospital.

Angela Heavner, MSIR, STA Sr. Physician and Staff Recruiter, met with students to share options available in the healthcare field that are accessible “right here at home.”

“Oftentimes, students hear ‘hospital’ and think of doctors and nurses as the main professions. It is important for them to know there are a plethora of vocations, which are vital in keeping a hospital operating effectively and efficiently. It is our goal to introduce our youth to these occupations and give them an opportunity to observe and speak with those working in these areas in hopes they become our future team members. It is a win-win!” shares Heavner.

St. Joseph’s Hospital offers opportunities for individuals with a high school diploma to begin a career in healthcare while working toward additional certifications. Students who commit to a working relationship with St. Joseph’s Hospital may receive financial and academic support.

On May 3rd, a small group of students will travel to St. Joseph’s Hospital, where they will participate in experiential learning opportunities relative to the inner workings of the hospital and healthcare field.

Dr. Sara Lewis-Stankus, Superintendent of Upshur County Schools shared, “Upshur County Schools are excited about the exploratory educational experiences being offered to our students. Our partnership with St. Joseph’s Hospital invites our students to explore their future in healthcare right here at home.”
