Soccer ‘Cats tumble to No. 6 Charleston, 8-1

CHARLESTON, W.Va.– The West Virginia Wesleyan (6-6-2, 4-6-2) men’s soccer team traveled south for a Mountain East Conference matchup against No. 6 Charleston (12-1-0, 11-1-0) on Sunday at the Welch Athletic Complex and dropped an 8-1 decision.
 
In the first half, Charleston’s high-powered attack struck first in the ninth minute when Ploutarchose Alonefti took the Gabriel Rodriguez pass and tucked it into the top right corner past the diving Logan Nelson.
 
WVWC answered in the 23rd minute when Tanner Amos took the Nugzar Barkaia pass and beat the UC keeper to his left for the equalizer.
 
UC snagged the lead before the end of the first half when Alejandro Larrayoz scored in the 27th minute off of an Eduardo Iranzo assist.
 
In the second half, the Golden Eagles extended their lead just 41 seconds into the new half. Alexis Ledoux placed a perfect shot into the upper left corner and gave UC a 3-1 lead.

The Golden Eagles went on for five more second-half goals as WVWC did not gain back control the rest of the way.
 
WVWC will host Notre Dame (Ohio) at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 27 at Culpepper Stadium.
