Zuliani, Hughes have top 10 finishes at state swim meet

MORGANTOWN – Carter Zuliani, the lone representative for the Buckhannon-Upshur swim Buccaneers at the West Virginia State High School Championships, had a pair of top eight finishes in the state meet last weekend at the Mylan Park Aquatic Center.

Zuliani finished fourth in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 22.41 and seventh in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 51.75.

Zuliani finished the meet with 18 points which put the one-man team of the Bucs in 18th place.

Huntington won the team title on the boys side with five first-place finishes for 186 points. Parkersburg South was runner-up with 163 points while Bridgeport was third with that same 163 points.

For the Lady Bucs, Mallory Hughes was the only B-U swimmer out of three individuals to make the finals, which she did in two events.

She placed eighth in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 26.10 and 11th in the 100-yard freestyle with a clocking of 58.61.

Hughes accumulated seven points which put the Lady Bucs 25th overall.

Lillian Fetty (50-yard freestyle, 500-yard freestyle, 200-yard freestyle) and Rylee Yardley (50-yard backstroke, 100-yard backstroke) qualified for states but did not make the finals as did the two relay teams of Hughes, Fetty, Yardley and Sammie Shay in the 200-yard freestyle and 200-yard medley.

Elkins won the state championship with 184 points while Morgantown was second with 135 points and Parkersburg South was third with 110.
