WVWC’s Cash and Hobbs earn MEC Indoor Track & Field awards

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Two Lady Bobcats took home personal hardware from the 2023 MEC Indoor Track & Field Championships this past weekend after their stellar performances at the meet and during the course of the indoor season.

Samantha Cash was named Most Outstanding Performer (Meet High Point) after winning the pentathlon and finishing second in the triple jump and taking third in both the high jump and triple jump. Cash also received Field Athlete of the Year.

Ny’Tierra Hobbs earned Track Athlete of the Year. Hobbs won both the 60-meter dash and 200-meter dash with an NCAA Provisional time in both events. Hobbs finished in the top-four in both the 60-meter and 200-meter dash at every meet this season besides the YSU College Invitational.

MEC Champions
Ny’Tierra Hobbs won the 60-meter dash and broke the school record with an NCAA Provisional time of 7.56 (24th in the country)!

Hobbs then won the 200-meter dash and broke another school record with an NCAA Provisional time of 24.71 (35th in the country)!

Samantha Cash won the Pentathlon with an NCAA Provisional mark of 3345 points (31st in the country)!

Top Finishes
Leigha Hall placed third in the 3000-meter run at 10:29.09 and 6th in the 5000-meter run at 18:47.83.

Jordan Lopez finished third in the weight throw with a throw of 15.70m.

Samantha Cash set a meet record in the Pentathlon high jump at 1.61m. She also set a meet record in the Pentathlon long jump at 5.27m.

Cash placed second in the triple jump at 11.50m, third in the long jump at 5.35m and third in the high jump with a jump of 1.57m.

Hayley Willey was seventh in the high jump at 1.47m.

Brady Browning was fifth in the pole vault at 2.93m.

Destry Nelson placed fifth in the pole vault at 3.00m.

Roman Moore was sixth in the weight throw with a throw of 14.10m.

Shannon Farrow finished fourth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 7.85.

Tanner Faulkiner finished fourth in the 60-meter dash (6.95) and in the 200-meter dash (22.25).

Aaron Kupfner placed fifth in the 60-meter hurdles at 8.49.

Sterlin Thropp ran a time of 50.01 to place eighth in the 400-meter dash.

Dakota Johnson placed seventh in the 800-meter run, crossing the line at 2:24.32.

Other notable performances
Aubrey Wiethe set a new PR in the 60-meter hudles at 9.38.
Tommy Hart ran a time of 7.18 in the 60-meter dash for a new personal-best.
Charles Malone also ran a 7.18 for a new PR as well.
Jacqualin Leaman threw 11.75m in the weight throw to set a new personal record.

Team Event Finishes
The women finished fourth in the 4×4 relay with a time of 4:03.64 and fourth in the distance medley with a time of 13:06.14.

The men finished fifth in the 4×4 relay with a time of 3:23.13 and sixth in the distance medley with a time of 10:41.02.

Where The Teams Placed
The women placed third with 87 total points.

The men finished eighth with 34 total points.
