WVWC Student Senate seeking opportunities to partner with B-U Community

BUCKHANNON – The new West Virginia Wesleyan College Student Senate Representative updated the Buckhanon City Council on all their upcoming projects.

Kaylie Brinckman, West Virginia Wesleyan College Student Senate Representative, attended the Feb. 2 city council meeting to introduce herself to the council and outline all their recent events and projects.

“I’m excited to be representing the Wesleyan’s Student Senate at the city council meetings, and we have a few events that already happened on campus as well as a few that are coming up,” Brinckman said. “On Saturday, Jan. 28, Wesleyan hosted a special needs prom, Wesleyan students, alumni and community members came together to offer dresses, makeup, hair appointments and snacks in addition to help set up for the event, we are also looking forward to doing the Polar Plunge on Feb. 11, hosted by the Special Olympics.”

Brinckman also highlighted the work of the (WE LEAD) Poverty Reduction team at WVWC.

“The team shared facts about the Buckhannon-Upshur community during the lunch hour on Jan. 30; we believe to truly live in the greater community of Buckhannon, we have to best understand the strengths and challenges our community faces,” Brinckman said. “The WE LEAD team is preparing to dig into the community by meeting with Buckhannon-Upshur Middle School counselors to see how we can be better community partners.”

Wesleyan is also conducting a plastic bag drive to make plastic yarn and then give to the Really, Really Free Market.

“Today on campus we hosted a Red Cross blood drive and students will be partnering with Upshur County Trails to support trail maintenance this semester,” Brinckman said. “Students will also be assisting with the Livestock Association and elimination dinner on Feb. 18.”

Division II Day is on Feb. 22, where student-athletes will come together to package Easter eggs for the children served by Upshur County Head Start.

“Wesleyan’s men and women’s basketball teams will also be volunteering and hosting a Special Olympics basketball tournament Feb. 12,” Brinckman said. “On Feb. 25, the college will be hosting an annual Orange and Black Day, and we expect over 100 students and their families to attend this experience.”
