WVU resources available to students, faculty and staff affected by government shutdown

Recognizing the continuing partial government shutdown – and the resulting missed paychecks for some federal employees – may be threatening students’ ability to meet financial obligations, West Virginia University has joined many other institutions offering assistance to those affected.

“As always, we want to support our Mountaineer family,” Provost Joyce McConnell said. “All of us at West Virginia University are committed to helping those affected by this shutdown.”

Undergraduate students experiencing financial hardship directly due to the shutdown, such that their ability to make tuition payments, etc. is affected, should contact the WVU Hub at 304.293.1988 or via an inquiry form that can be found at this link.

Proof of relevant federal employment and furloughed status (e.g. of a parent or guardian) may be required and financial assistance may be limited to the waiver of late fees and other charges.

Graduate students experiencing financial hardship directly due to the shutdown, such that their ability to make tuition payments, etc. is affected, should contact the Office of Graduate Education and Life at 304.293.7173 or katherine.karraker@mail.wvu.edu.

West Virginia University faculty or staff directly financially affected by the shutdown should send an email to provost@mail.wvu.edu regarding their specific situation.

“Our resources for this are limited,” McConnell said, “and we likely will not be able to meet all the needs. However we know the weight financial pressures bring. We want to provide whatever assistance we can to lighten that burden.”
