WVDOH prepared for forecasted weather over the weekend, urges caution to traveling public

With heavy rains expected to impact a large portion of West Virginia over the weekend, the West Virginia Division of Highways is prepared to combat the effects of the severe weather system.

“The WVDOH will have crews all across the state ready to respond to a wide variety of conditions that could occur as a result of the forecasted weather,” said West Virginia Department of Transportation Secretary Stephen T. Rumbaugh, P.E. “By working closely with the West Virginia Emergency Management Division and other crisis partners, including the WVDOT Transportation Management Center, the agency remains ready to serve the citizens of West Virginia who depend on the highway system.”

As of Friday afternoon, February 14, 2025, the National Weather Service issued a Flood Watch or Flood Warning for the majority of counties in West Virginia beginning Saturday, February 15 through Monday, February 17. Those counties under watches and warnings include Barbour, Boone, Braxton, Cabell, Calhoun, Clay, Doddridge, Gilmer, Harrison, Jackson, Kanawha, Lewis, Lincoln, Logan, Mason, McDowell, Mingo, Fayette, Northwest Nicholas, Pocahontas, Pleasants, Putnam, Raleigh, Randolph, Ritchie, Taylor, Tyler, Upshur, Wayne, Wirt, Webster, Wood, Wyoming, Brooke, Preston, Tucker, Marion, Marshall, Monongalia, Ohio and Wetzel counties.

Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams and other low-lying and flood-prone locations. Flooding may also occur in poor drainage and urban areas. Extensive street flooding is possible.

“The WVDOH will actively monitor the road conditions and use proper signage when it becomes necessary to close a road due to high water, road slips or landslides,” Rumbaugh said. “Remember to never drive through high water, stay off cell phones and be mindful of our crews who are out working in these conditions.”
