Wu to lead bachelor’s nursing programs at D&E

ELKINS – Dr. Huixin Wu, an educator and registered nurse, has been appointed director of the bachelor’s nursing programs at Davis & Elkins College. In this capacity, she will help initiate the College’s new residential Bachelor of Science in nursing program and oversee the online RN to BSN degree completion program.

In December, the West Virginia Board of Examiners for Registered Professional Nurses recently granted approval for D&E to add the four-year program beginning in fall 2019. The College will continue to offer an Associate of Science in nursing program.

“Dr. Wu comes to Davis & Elkins as an accomplished teacher and scholar who also has wonderful experience in the nursing field,” said D&E Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Rob Phillips. “The faculty and I are very excited to welcome her to campus, and to work with her to expand and strengthen our offerings in nursing.”

A native of Nanjing, China, Wu comes to D&E from Chatham University in Pittsburgh, Pa., where she served as assistant professor of nursing since 2014. As an educator, she also has worked as a teaching fellow and adjunct faculty of nursing at the University of Pittsburgh and as an adjunct faculty of nursing at Community College of Allegheny County.

In the clinical setting, Wu has been employed as a clinical research coordinator and senior professional staff nurse at UPMC Shadyside Hospital, an informatics nurse intern at Allegheny Health Network and Allscripts, an ICU travel registered nurse at Accountable Healthcare, a professional staff nurse at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital, and a Registered Nurse at Jiangsu Institute of Cancer Research and Hospital.

Wu holds multiple academic degrees, licensures and certifications. She earned a Master of Business Administration from Chatham University in 2017, a Doctor of Nursing Practice, Post-Master of Science Nursing Informatics Certificate and a Master of Science in Nursing, all from the University of Pittsburgh. In addition, she completed independent study at Rock Valley College, and received a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing from Peking University, as associate’s degree in English from Nanjing Normal University and a Diploma of Nursing from Changzhou Health School.

Wu also has been the author or co-author of several articles in professional publications including the International Journal of Nursing Sciences, Nurse Education Today, Dimensions of Critical Care Nursing and Chinese Journal of Nursing, among others.

The Davis & Elkins College Division of Nursing prepares students to function competently and safely at the beginning staff level position, and provides the foundation for upward mobility into higher levels of nursing education. The Associate in Science degree in nursing curriculum combines selections from the liberal arts and related cognates with courses from the professional major. In addition, the concept of educational mobility is incorporated, allowing LPN students to enter the curriculum with advanced placement. The new BSN program curriculum will incorporate some courses from the associate degree program and some courses from the degree completion program. The online RN-BSN Degree Completion Program is designed for working RNs who are adult learners and is offered in three consecutive 16-week rotations that can be completed in 12 months.

For the past two years, Davis & Elkins College nursing students have achieved a 100 percent pass rate on the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN). Within six months, 100 percent of D&E Nursing graduates are employed.
