West Virginia Wesleyan College graduate places second in mathematics conference

BUCKHANNON, West Virginia – A West Virginia Wesleyan College December graduate recently presented at the 18th annual Shenandoah Undergraduate Mathematics and Statistics Conference at James Madison University.

Elizabeth Harvey ’22, of Cross Lanes, West Virginia, won second place in the Pure Mathematics Poster Session for her poster entitled “Lewis Carroll’s Triangle Problem.” The research was completed as part of a summer Research Experience for Undergraduates entitled “Discrete and Continuous Analysis in Appalachia.”

This REU was sponsored by the National Science Foundation and was held at Fairmont State University under the direction of Dr. Tom Cuchta and Dr. Bob Niichel.

This month, Harvey will be attending the Joint Mathematics Meetings in Boston, Massachusetts.

“I became a math major before I really enjoy problem-solving and I’ve always found it extremely gratifying to work on a problem and get the answer correct,” Harvey said. “I think working with numbers and equations is challenging and mentally rewarding.”

Harvey plans to pursue a career in statistics or data science.

“Wesleyan’s math department has been wonderful in the availability of classes that are offered,” she said. “Since class sizes are small, you get to know your professors, which is helpful if you need to go to office hours for help. They are extremely receptive to any kind of math questions, no matter the subject or level of math at which you are studying.”
