West Virginia reports 8,535 active COVID-19 cases, 11 new deaths on Tuesday

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources announced Tuesday that 8,535 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in the Mountain State. That’s a decrease of 498 since the last report.

Locally, COVID-19 cases are active in Upshur (120), Barbour (85), Lewis (84), Randolph (73) and Webster (50) counties. In Upshur County, that’s a decrease of 11 active cases in the last 24 hours.

Eleven additional deaths have been attributed to the disease, according to the DHHR – a 64-year old male from Wood County, a 50-year old male from Kanawha County, a 41-year old female from Kanawha County, a 32-year old male from Wood County, a 74-year old male from Kanawha County, a 75-year old male from Kanawha County, a 54-year old female from Wayne County, a 74-year old male from Cabell County, a 46-year old female from Hancock County, an 82-year old female from Putnam County, and a 62-year old female from Putnam County.

“The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR) reports as of October 19, 2021, there are currently 8,535 active COVID-19 cases statewide. There have been 11 deaths reported since the last report, with a total of 4,145 deaths attributed to COVID-19,” according to a press release.

About 746 residents are hospitalized with the virus (76% unvaccinated, 24% vaccinated), with 218 currently in intensive care (86% unvaccinated, 14% vaccinated) and 136 on a ventilator (88% unvaccinated, 12% vaccinated). The daily percent positive was 8.74%.

A total of 905,290 people have been fully vaccinated for COVID-19 in West Virginia, meaning they have received both doses of the vaccine, the DHHR said.  That’s about 51% of the state.
