West Virginia reports 7,673 active COVID-19 cases, 17 new deaths on Friday

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources announced Friday that 7,673 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in the Mountain State. That’s an increase of 560 since the last report.

Locally, COVID-19 cases are active in Upshur (101), Barbour (63), Lewis (133), Randolph (82) and Webster (37) counties. In Upshur County, that’s an increase of seven active cases in the last 24 hours.

Seventeen additional deaths have been attributed to the disease, according to the DHHR – an 88-year old female from Pendleton County, a 31-year old female from Marshall County, a 59-year old male from Lincoln County, a 92-year old female from Marshall County, a 63-year old female from Lewis County, a 70-year old female from Kanawha County, an 83-year old male from Ohio County, a 65-year old male from Morgan County, a 45-year old male from Morgan County, a 73-year old male from Kanawha County, a 77-year old female from Harrison County, a 69-year old female from Marshall County, a 59-year old male from Berkeley County, a 72-year old male from Hardy County, an 86-year old male from Jackson County, a 22-year old female from Hardy County, and a 54-year old female from Preston County.

“The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR) reports as of December 3, 2021, there are currently 7,673 active COVID-19 cases statewide. There have been 17 deaths reported since the last report, with a total of 4,962 deaths attributed to COVID-19,” according to a press release.

About 583 residents are hospitalized with the virus (78% unvaccinated, 22% vaccinated), with 192 currently in intensive care (85% unvaccinated, 15% vaccinated) and 97 on a ventilator (87% unvaccinated, 13% vaccinated). The daily percent positive was 9.32%.

A total of 896,261 people have been fully vaccinated for COVID-19 in West Virginia, the DHHR said. That’s about 50% of the state.
