West Virginia reports 5,000th COVID-19 case Sunday as hospitalizations, active cases continue to climb

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources announced Sunday that 120 new cases of COVID-19 have been identified in the Mountain State.

“The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources reports as of 5 p.m. on July 19, 2020, there have been 230,864 total confirmatory laboratory results received for COVID-19, with 5,042 total cases and 100 deaths,” according to a press release.

The 5,000-case milestone comes with Monongalia County leading the state with 733 cases. On Saturday, WVU announced that 28 football players tested positive for the virus, along with athletes in several other sports.

New cases were reported Sunday in Berkeley, Boone, Brooke, Greenbrier, Hampshire, Hancock, Harrison, Jefferson, Kanawha, Logan, Marion, Marshall, Mercer, Mingo, Monongalia, Ohio, Pleasants, Preston, Putnam, Wayne, Wetzel and Wood counties.

About 1,569 West Virginia cases remain active, according DHHR data. Of the cases that are no longer active, 3,373 people have recovered and 100 have died.
