West Virginia reports 405 new COVID-19 cases, 12 additional deaths on Wednesday

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources announced Wednesday that 405 new cases of COVID-19 have been identified in the Mountain State.

Locally, new cases were reported in Upshur (5), Barbour (3), Lewis (5) and Randolph (8) counties. A total of 17 cases are currently active in Upshur County, according to the DHHR.

Twelve additional deaths have been attributed to the disease, according to the DHHR:

  • a 51-year old male from Wood County,
  • a 91-year old male from Cabell County,
  • a 43-year old male from Hancock County,
  • an 83-year old female from McDowell County,
  • a 62-year old male from Raleigh County,
  • a 71-year old female from Berkeley County,
  • a 69-year old male from Kanawha County,
  • an 86-year old male from Kanawha County,
  • a 66-year old male from Logan County,
  • an 89-year old female from Wood County,
  • a 99-year old male from Kanawha County,
  • an 81-year old female from Wood County.

“The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR) reports as of May 5, 2021, there have been 2,757,291 total confirmatory laboratory results received for COVID-19, with 154,956 total cases and 2,707 deaths,” according to a press release.

About 7,199 West Virginia cases remain active, according DHHR data. Of the cases that are no longer active, 145,050 people have recovered and 2,707 have died. The daily percent positive was 3.69%.

A total of 653,048 people have been fully vaccinated for COVID-19 in West Virginia, meaning they have received both doses of the vaccine, the DHHR said. That’s about 36% of the state’s population.
