West Virginia reports 2,157 active COVID cases, one new death on Wednesday

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources announced Wednesday that 2,157 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in the Mountain State. That’s a decrease of 79 since the last report. 

Locally, reported active case totals are: Upshur (22), Barbour (35), Lewis (11), Randolph (35) and Webster (3) counties. In Upshur County, that’s an increase of three active cases in the last 24 hours. 

One additional death has been attributed to the disease, according to the DHHR – a 90-year-old male from Putnam County. 

“The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR) reports as of May 25, 2022, there are currently 2,157 active COVID-19 cases statewide. There has been one death reported since the last report, with a total of 6,933 deaths attributed to COVID-19,” according to a press release. 

About 139 residents are hospitalized with the virus (46% unvaccinated, 54% vaccinated), with 22 currently in intensive care (50% unvaccinated, 50% vaccinated) and 9 on a ventilator (78% unvaccinated, 22% vaccinated). The daily percent positive was 14.26%. 

A total of 978,021 people have been vaccinated for COVID-19 in West Virginia, the DHHR said.  That’s about 55% of the state. About 494,429 booster doses have been administered.
