West Virginia reports 1,795 active COVID cases, two new deaths on Wednesday

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources announced Wednesday that 1,795 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in the Mountain State. That’s a decrease of 35 since the last report. 

Locally, reported active case totals are: Upshur (21), Barbour (16), Lewis (15), Randolph (15) and Webster (2) counties. In Upshur County, that’s a decrease of three active cases in the last 24 hours. 

Two additional deaths have been attributed to the disease, according to the DHHR – a 65-year old male from Kanawha County and a 60-year old male from Berkeley County. 

“The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR) reports as of May 18, 2022, there are currently 1,795 active COVID-19 cases statewide. There have been two deaths reported since the last report, with a total of 6,905 deaths attributed to COVID-19,” according to a press release. 

About 149 residents are hospitalized with the virus (46% unvaccinated, 54% vaccinated), with 22 currently in intensive care (36% unvaccinated, 64% vaccinated) and 11 on a ventilator (64% unvaccinated, 36% vaccinated). The daily percent positive was 6.81%. 

A total of 976,813 people have been vaccinated for COVID-19 in West Virginia, the DHHR said.  That’s about 55% of the state. About 487,046 booster doses have been administered.
