Wesleyan softball team earns doubleheader split with Davis & Elkins

ELKINS — The West Virginia Wesleyan Lady Bobcats and the Davis & Elkins Senators split a doubleheader on Wednesday, with Wesleyan taking game one by a 2-0 but dropping the nightcap, 6-2. The doubleheader was highlighted with great pitching in game 1 by Kendall Stoffel, pitching a two-hit shutout racking up seven strikeouts. Defensive errors still plague the Lady Bobcats’ defense with a combined 5 errors between the two games.

Game 1

Wesleyan collected nine hits and allowed just two in the game. With the bases loaded in the second inning, Jenna Gomez hit a one-run single to left field scoring Stoffel from third base to make it 1-0. Later in the fifth inning, Stoffel gave herself some insurance runs by singling and bringing in another run to score, making it 2-0. Other notable performances at the plate right fielder, Andie Dizon went 3-4. Going into the bottom of the seventh the Senators got a lead off single but Stoffel struck out two of the next three batters to end game one.

Game 2

Offensively in game two, the Lady Bobcats were held in check by the pitching of Davis and Elkins. The stater, Sammie Jarvis, pitched seven innings allowing seven hits and two earned runs. Kelsi Brown made the start for the Lady Bobcats pitching four innings and allowing two earned runs. A sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first for the Senators put them in the run column. Wesleyan tied it up with a one-run single from Kelsi Brown scoring Stoffel. A solo home run for Davis and Elkins edged them ahead 2-1 after the second inning. Carlee Iannone hit a one-run single to tie it up again at 2-2. In the sixth inning, a run scored on a wild-pitch and a three-run home run widened the Senator’s lead to 6-2.

The Lady Bobcats will be on the road again playing the University of Charleston Saturday, April 20 starting at 2 p.m.
