Wesleyan softball splits twin bill with Frostburg State

FROSTBURG (Md.) — After a narrow 4-3 victory in Game 1 of the doubleheader, Wesleyan fell to Frostburg State 11-7 in Game 2 at Bobcat Field in Maryland on Tuesday afternoon.

In Game 1, Wesleyan wasted no time jumping on Frostburg’s starting pitcher, Katie Chapple. After Alyssa Rohr worked a one-out walk, Andie Dizon followed with a single to center. Designated hitter Kendall Stoffel capitalized, knocking in Rohr with a single to left to put Wesleyan on the board. The inning continued with a sequence of sharp hits, highlighted by Gracie Arnold’s two-run single—helped by a Frostburg error—that cleared the bases. By the end of the first, Wesleyan had built a commanding 4-0 lead.

After being held scoreless through two innings, Frostburg’s offense showed life in the third. Cristina Sommerkamp led off with a double, setting the table for Sage Haller, who delivered a two-run home run to left field. That blast cut the deficit to 4-2, shifting momentum back in Frostburg’s favor.

The home team continued to chip away in the sixth when Arden Miller doubled and later scored on a RBI double by Ashlynn Routzahn. With the lead down to just one, Wesleyan turned to Stoffel in relief, who entered and immediately shut down the threat.

Wesleyan’s pitching duo of Kelsi Brown (1-6) and Stoffel (S, 1) proved to be the difference. Brown worked 5.2 solid innings, scattering six hits and allowing three earned runs while striking out two. Stoffel took over in the sixth, striking out three batters in 1.1 innings to earn the save.

Frostburg had a final chance to tie or win in the seventh. After Sommerkamp drew a leadoff walk, Haller reached on a fielder’s choice but advanced to second on a throwing error. With the tying run just 60 feet away, Stoffel bore down, striking out Katie Healy and getting Hanna Binek to swing through strike three to end the game.

In the second game, the Frostburg State Bobcats put up nine combined runs in the second and third innings, capitalizing on defensive miscues and timely hitting.

After a scoreless first inning, Frostburg’s bats came alive in the second. The Bobcats took advantage of an error to plate their first run before Arden Miller hit a two-run triple to right field, stretching the lead to 4-0.

The momentum continued in the third when Frostburg put up five more runs. Samara Funk led off with a double, and after a series of walks and errors, the Bobcats capitalized with a two-run single from Zoey Marinello. Morgan Gross added an RBI single, and when the dust settled, Frostburg led 9-1.

Despite trailing 9-1, Wesleyan began a comeback attempt in the fifth, plating four runs to cut the lead to 9-5. Andie Dizon continued her stellar day at the plate, delivering an RBI single, while Kelsi Brown followed with an RBI hit of her own. Rhiannon Godley added another RBI single before getting thrown out trying to steal second.

After Frostburg tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the fifth, Wesleyan still showed life in the seventh, loading the bases with walks before Alyssa Rohr’s RBI single and Dizon’s fielder’s choice RBI cut the deficit to 11-7. However, a groundout ended the rally, sealing Frostburg’s victory.

Frostburg’s Ally Myers (1-5) earned her first win of the season, throwing four innings while allowing four earned runs on six hits. Izabella Donaldson came on in relief and closed out the final three innings, allowing three runs on five hits while working through traffic.

Wesleyan had to rely on three pitchers after Stoffel was chased in the third inning. Morgan Greene provided stability, tossing three innings and allowing just one earned run.

With the split, Frostburg improved to 6-14, while Wesleyan dropped to 6-18.

The Lady Bobcats open home field play with a doubleheader scheduled against Glenville State University on Saturday, Mar. 22 at 1 p.m.
