BUCKHANNON, W.Va. — Del Smith ’05, the head football coach at West Virginia Wesleyan College, has resigned to pursue new career endeavors.

Smith’s teams were regarded for their preparation and effort during his tenure at Wesleyan. He leaves the Bobcats with a three-year coaching record of 10-23. Nearly half of the losses were by less than five points. Smith’s coaches and players also made a tremendous investment serving Upshur County and the state of West Virginia through various community service initiatives.

“We are immensely grateful for the leadership Del has provided to our program,” said Wesleyan President, Dr. Joel Thierstein. “He recruited quality student-athletes and worked very hard to ensure our football program exemplified the mission of the college. We wish him great success.”

Prior to his arrival at Wesleyan, Smith was the defensive coordinator at Bridgewater College in Virginia (Division III). He spent three years as the head coach at Bishop O’Connell High School where he was named the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference and Arlington County Coach of the Year. He also coached at the Blue Ridge School from 2008-10 and was recognized as the 2009 Virginia Independent and Old Dominion Football Conference Coach of the Year.

Smith, who was a member of Wesleyan’s 2002 and 2003 West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championship teams, began his coaching career at the college in 2005.
