Waggy runs fourth for XC Bucs in opener at University

MORGANTOWN – Jack Waggy ran fourth out of 37 runners for the Buckhannon-Upshur cross-country Buccaneers in their 2023 debut in a three-team race at University Tuesday evening.

Waggy posted a time of 16:13.69.

“Waggy improved his time by over 90 seconds in the meet from this year to last year,” noted Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Taylor Stacy.

The Bucs finished third out of the three teams with 61 points.

University won their own meet with 17 points, while East Fairmont was second with 59. Brooke and Clay-Battelle did not field complete teams.

Drew Zundell of University won the individual title with a time of 15:39.28, while his teammate Tyler Umbright was second with a time of 15:59.63.

For the Bucs, trailing Waggy was Joey Nolte in 13th (18:11.28), Alex Sappey in 16th (18:48.00), Isaac Snodgrass in 20th (19:52.87), Jeremy Allman in 27th (21:32.48) and Bryce Mullens in 32nd (23:06.14).

“Nolte and Sappey both ran personal bests,” said Stacy. “I thought overall it was a really good showing for the team. It was a good start to our season.”

The Bucs will run again this Saturday night in the Preston Knight Night Relays.

“We hope to have a good fun race at the Knight Night Relays before we buckle down for the season,” concluded Stacy.”
