Volleyball Lady ‘Cats drop MEC opener at home to Notre Dame

BUCKHANNON – The West Virginia Wesleyan volleyball team hosted the Falcons of Notre Dame in the first conference match up of the season Friday night. A competitive match up lead to a five-set match with the Falcons taking the victory 3-2.

The Falcons took set one with a score of 25-14. Highlighted by the Falcon’s offense, Jayme Zoeckler, with 12 assists and Sydney Brady with seven kills. Defensively, the Falcons were aided through Kiley Kalina’s seven digs.

Set two was taken by the Lady Bobcats, 25-23. A close back and fourth match with the biggest point differential being four in favor of Notre Dame., at 18-14. The Lady Bobcats climbed their way to win the set with a total of 16 kills. Makenzie Yates, Jayla Cowered, and Hope Arce-Reed combined for 11 kills in and Alauna Wilson recorded 12 assists to aid in the Lady Bobcat’s offensive attack.

Set three was a similar story, a close 25-23 set with the Lady Bobcats on top. The Lady Bobcats recorded 18 kills with Arce-Reed leading the team with five. Wilson again aided in the offensive attack with 15 assists. The difference in this set came down to the defense of the Lady Bobcats. With sixteam blocks compared to the Falcons two, deemed to be the difference in the set. Freshman Bhrooke Axe and senior Jayla Cowherd both recorded two block assists each in the set. Libero Autumn Molenhouse, recorded seven digs playing a key role in the Lady Bobcat’s defense.

In sets four and five, the Falcons combined for a total of 26 kills to the Lady Bobcat’s 17. The Falcons took set four, 25-13, with a combined 11 kills between Sydney Bray and Samantha Comer. Zoeckler had 14 assists in set four to aid the offensive attack for the Falcons. Set five ended with a score of 15-8 in favor of the Falcons.

The Lady Bobcats look ahead to their next matchup against the Golden Eagles of Charleston. They are set to play Tuesday, Sept. 26.
