Upshur County man among 19 new COVID deaths reported in West Virginia on Thursday

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources announced Thursday that 8,857 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in the Mountain State. That’s an increase of 375 since the last report.

Locally, COVID-19 cases are active in Upshur (83), Barbour (62), Lewis (159), Randolph (98) and Webster (53) counties. In Upshur County, that’s an unchanged number of active cases in the last 24 hours.

Nineteen additional deaths have been attributed to the disease, according to the DHHR – an 82-year old male from Wood County, a 76-year old male from Berkeley County, a 73-year old male from Mingo County, a 72-year old female from Raleigh County, a 71-year old male from Logan County, a 68-year old female from Raleigh County, a 44-year old male from Upshur County, a 62-year old male from Marion County, a 75-year old male from Marshall County, an 87-year old male from Wood County, an 89-year old female from Raleigh County, a 52-year old male from Wood County, a 75-year old female from Taylor County, an 81-year old male from Ohio County, a 66-year old female from Jackson County, a 70-year old female from Wayne County, a 74-year old female from Berkeley County, a 50-year old male from Kanawha County, and a 67-year old male from Preston County.

“The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR) reports as of December 9, 2021, there are currently 8,857 active COVID-19 cases statewide. There have been 19 deaths reported since the last report, with a total of 5,055 deaths attributed to COVID-19,” according to a press release.

About 602 residents are hospitalized with the virus (80% unvaccinated, 20% vaccinated), with 208 currently in intensive care (83% unvaccinated, 17% vaccinated) and 126 on a ventilator (86% unvaccinated, 14% vaccinated). The daily percent positive was 8.09%.

A total of 903,448 people have been fully vaccinated for COVID-19 in West Virginia, the DHHR said.  That’s about 50% of the state.
