BUCKHANNON – A Virginia man who allegedly admitted to shooting another man in the leg in December but reportedly lied to police about his identity was indicted Monday in Upshur County Circuit Court.
Lavar Anthony O’Neal, 39, of Newport News, Virginia, gave Upshur County Sheriff’s deputies a different name after being arrested on a malicious wounding charge for allegedly shooting a man, Zachary Crawford, in the leg and foot following an altercation Tuesday, Dec. 15, 2020, on Wabash Avenue.
O’Neal was indicted one count of malicious assault, a felony; three counts of forgery of a public record, a felony; three counts of uttering a public record, a felony; and one count of fleeing or attempting to flee by means other than use of a vehicle, a misdemeanor.
In the January 2021 term of Upshur County Circuit Court, a total of 28 individuals were charged in 31 indictments handed up by an Upshur County grand jury, according to a press release from the Upshur County Prosecuting Attorney Bryan Hinkle’s office. A variety of charges were listed, ranging from strangulation and first-degree sexual abuse to burglary, grand larceny and third-offense driving with license revoked for DUI.
