Upshur County Community Emergency Response Team informational session slated for Oct. 18

BUCKHANNON — The Upshur County Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management is hosting an informational session about Upshur County’s Community Emergency Response Team, commonly referred to as CERT.

Upshur DHSEM will hold the forum, entitled “Get to Know Your Local CERT Program” from 7-8 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 18 at the City of Buckhannon’s Public Safety Complex, located at 24 S. Florida Street in Buckhannon.

During this session, a variety of topics will be discussed, including:

What CERT is and how it got started
How CERT benefits communities
Teen and Campus CERT programs
The CERT program in Upshur County
Opportunities for volunteers within our county CERT program, including 1) generalized support/training and 2) specialized support units/training (amateur radio, pet rescue/sheltering, and traffic management

Carlyle wins regional long jump, advances to states in two other events along with 4 x 800-meter relay squad for Lady Buc track and field team

Buckhannon-Upshur junior Rylen Carlyle won the South Regional long jump at 16-03.25 and also qualified for states in the 100-meter dash and 300-meter hurdles at Laidley Field. The Lady Bucs’ 4×800 relay placed seventh to earn a state berth, with the team finishing 10th overall.

Baisden, 4 x 800-meter relay team heading to states for B-U track and field team

Kadyn Baisden and Buckhannon-Upshur’s 4×800 relay are headed to the state track meet after strong showings at the South Regional Championships in Charleston. The relay team placed sixth in 8:43.33, and Baisden qualified with an eighth-place high jump at 5-10.

Lacrosse Lady Bucs fall in state semis to Morgantown, 7-5

A slow start doomed the Buckhannon-Upshur Lady Bucs in the state semis as they fell behind 6-0 early and couldn’t complete the comeback in a 7-5 loss to Morgantown. Mallory Moss scored four goals in the rally, but the Mohigans ran out the clock to end B-U’s season at 8-5.

Advocate program highlights urgent need for foster parents in Upshur County, especially for sibling groups

The National Youth Advocate Program is using Foster Care Awareness Month to spotlight the ongoing need for foster families in West Virginia. Licensing specialist Tina Hevener urged residents to consider fostering — particularly sibling groups and older youth.

Vandalia Health Broaddus Hospital expands access to lung health screenings for coal miners

Coal miners in north central West Virginia can now get specialized lung health screenings close to home at Vandalia Health Broaddus Hospital, newly approved for NIOSH’s Coal Workers’ Health Surveillance Program spirometry testing.
