Upshur County sees bump in COVID cases, DHHR reports Tuesday

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources announced Tuesday that 2,184 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in the Mountain State. That’s a decrease of 193 since the last report. 

Locally, reported active case totals are: Upshur (41), Barbour (10), Lewis (37), Randolph (32) and Webster (5) counties. In Upshur County, that’s an increase of 15 active cases over the long weekend.

Three additional deaths have been attributed to the disease, according to the DHHR – a 107-year old female from Berkeley County, a 76-year old female from Barbour County, and a 92-year old female from Hampshire County. 

“The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR) reports as of May 31, 2022, there are currently 2,184 active COVID-19 cases statewide. There have been three deaths reported since the last report, with a total of 6,948 deaths attributed to COVID-19,” according to a press release. 

About 165 residents are hospitalized with the virus (58% unvaccinated, 42% vaccinated), with 23 currently in intensive care (74% unvaccinated, 26% vaccinated) and 9 on a ventilator (78% unvaccinated, 22% vaccinated). The daily percent positive was 11.65%. 

A total of 978,747 people have been vaccinated for COVID-19 in West Virginia, the DHHR said.  That’s about 55% of the state. About 499,611 booster doses have been administered.
