Two new Upshur County cases, five COVID-19 deaths announced Tuesday

Two more COVID-19 cases were reported in Upshur County on Tuesday as West Virginia continues to see record numbers of new cases.

According to a press release from the Upshur-Buckhannon Health Department, the county now has 36 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and two probable cases. Nine cases are active and one person is currently hospitalized, the release says.

The health department also said all 801 people who were tested during the free testing event on July 10-11 were negative. The results trickled in over more than two weeks amid nationwide problems getting test results processed in a timely manner.

Overall, the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources announced Tuesday that 119 new cases of COVID-19 have been identified in the Mountain State.

In the past seven days, 974 new cases have been reported in West Virginia, a record one-week increase.

Five additional deaths have also been attributed to the disease, according to the DHHR – a 47-year old female from Berkeley County, a 60-year old female from Preston County, a 77-year old female from Mercer County, an 87-year old female from Mercer County and an 87-year old female from Wood County.

“We join with these families as they grieve the loss of their loved ones,” said Bill J. Crouch, DHHR Cabinet Secretary in a press release.

“The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources reports as of 5 p.m. on July 28, 2020, there have been 269,704 total confirmatory laboratory results received for COVID-19, with 6,173 total cases and 111 deaths,” according to the release.

New cases were reported Tuesday in Barbour, Berkeley, Brooke, Cabell, Fayette, Grant, Greenbrier, Hampshire, Hancock, Harrison, Jackson, Jefferson, Kanawha, Lincoln, Logan, Marshall, McDowell, Mercer, Mineral, Mingo, Monongalia, Ohio, Pendleton, Pocahontas, Putnam, Raleigh, Randolph, Taylor, Upshur and Wayne counties.

About 1,581 West Virginia cases remain active, according DHHR data. Of the cases that are no longer active, 4,481 people have recovered and 111 have died. The daily percent positive was 3.18%
