Turning a hobby into a business: DeBarr brothers open sporting goods store in Upshur County

BUCKHANNON – The DeBarr brothers, Kevin and Eddie, have opened 3D Arms, a family-owned business founded on a lifelong respect for sporting goods, the outdoors and the second amendment.

“What we’ve done is turn a hobby into a business,” Eddie DeBarr said. “We’re gun enthusiasts, we’re hunters.”

The business name “3D Arms” derives from the last name of each instrumental partner in this business plan: Eddie, Kevin and their father Butch.

“We grew up with a dad that taught us how to shoot, how to hunt and how to do that safely,” Kevin said.

This sporting goods store offers customers a full-service firearm gunsmith, black powder firearm building (with black powder shooting and building supplies), and new and used firearm sales. Pawn services are not yet available for customers, but will soon include firearms and precious metals such as gold and silver.

Store offerings include handguns, rifles, cases, holsters and ammunition. And if a customer does not find their desired firearm at first glance, 3D Arms has the ability to order from wholesale firearm locations and have it delivered to the store for pickup.

The DeBarr brothers are no stranger to dreaming about safe and unique firearms.

Kevin DeBarr, of Buckhannon, has been a professional gunsmith and firearm builder for over 40 years. With extensive amounts of experience in custom-made black powder rifle manufacturing, Kevin hopes to host classes at 3D Arms in the future where six to eight students could build their own muzzleloader under his trained supervision. Tools and materials would be provided for each student: stock, barrel, locks, trigger guards and more.

The moment customers walk in the door at 3D Arms, Eddie wants to ensure each customer receives an abundance of knowledge about their firearm and learns extensive firearms safety before they leave.

“I’m going to teach them knowledge and safety, [that] is my biggest priority,” Eddie said. “[Ensuring the customers] know how to handle the firearm correctly, safely… We want to school people on what we do.”

“We want to sell quantity and quality at a very, very affordable price,” Kevin added.

In the coming weeks, the DeBarr family invites local law enforcement officers for an “LEO” appreciation event and conversations about law enforcement needs in the Upshur County area. Then, 3D Arms will hold a gathering for the public at a later event with refreshments, fun and sales.

Visit 3D Arms directly behind WeldFab LLC at 4169 Little Sand Run Road in Buckhannon. The store is open Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., Friday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. 3D Arms is closed on Sundays. Keep up to date with new inventory, events and sales on the 3D Arms Facebook page or call 304-472-AMMO (2666).
