Tennis Lady Bucs beat North Marion, 6-1

ELKINS – The Buckhannon-Upshur Lady Buc netters picked up a key Big 10 Conference win last week downing the North Marion Huskies by a 6-1 count.

The Lady Bucs swept doubles action with Lainey Rowan and Mya Critchfield winning at No. 1, Cate O’Neill and Alexis Wuchner winning at No. 2 and Patience Cook at Taylor Parke winning at No. 3.

In singles action, Critchfield was victorious at No. 2, O’Neill was dominant at No. 3 and Wuchner won at No. 4.

“North Marion, last year, was at the top of the Big 10, but several of those girls either graduated or are not playing this year, so they are having a rebuilding year,” noted Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Jason Rock. “That said, our girls showed that they were the better team.”

Two days later, the Lady Bucs were winning 3-1 against Elkins before the match was called due to darkness.

“It’s really unfortunate that we ran out of daylight,” stated Rock. “I am confident that our girls would have won the match. The highlight by far on the girls’ side was Mya’s tiebreaker win against a tough opponent. Mya is our No. 3 seed but had to step up to the No. 1 seed and crushed it. She showed a lot of maturity in her mental game with how she bounced back from a tough loss in doubles to win a marathon of a singles match.”

The Lady Bucs are now 1-1 overall and 1-1 in the Big 10 Conference.

They were slated to play University on Monday and will visit Lewis County on Tuesday.
