Tennis ‘Cats secure MEC tournament bid after downing D&E

ELKINS, W.Va.— WVWC tennis took down Davis & Elkins on Friday to secure a bid into the Mountain East Conference tournament. The ‘Cats defeated their opposition 5-2 in the winning effort. 

WVWC got the scoring action started with wins at No. 1 and 3 in doubles play to secure the opening point in the contest. The double pairings of Taylor Papworth and Khiro Karasawa won 6-0 at No. 1 while Nicolas Zumba and Ethan Thomas won 6-3 at no. 3 to give WVWC first blood. 

Karasawa and Papworth both won their matchups in singles with Papworth using a third set to defeat his opponent at no. 2, 6-4, 3-6, 6-1. The two victories gave WVWC the 3-0 advantage. Camillo Salvi and Anthony McIntosh would defeat their opponents at No. 3 and 5 to secure the match and round out the scoring for WVWC. Salvi won in straight sets 6-3, 6-4 to claim his match at no. 3, while McIntosh won 6-3,6-3 at no. 5 to follow suite. 

Up Next 
The Bobcats were slated to take on  Bluefield State College at home on Saturday (Apr. 23). Before the match there will be a court dedication ceremony for Jim Smith to honor a legendary coach in the programs rich history.
