Tennis Bucs earn solid win against Wheeling Park

BUCKHANNON – The Buckhannon-Upshur boys’ tennis team picked up another huge regional win after defeating Wheeling Park at home on Monday at the WVWC courts.

The Bucs downed the Patriots by a 5-2, after defeating regional foe University last week.

“It was a really intense match,” noted Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Jason Rock. “I am really proud of how the boys fought for every point.”

The Bucs picked up two points in doubles action as Aden Pitts and Caden Andrick downed Braden Koon and Wyatt Andrews by a 9-7 score at No. 1 doubles and Mauricio Menendez and Hank Phillips beat Nick Tishchler and Grant Kenamond by an 8-1 score at No. 2 doubles.

“Pitts and Andrick had a slow start and went down 5-2 but asserted themselves as the better team going up 6-5. From there, it was really tight going back and forth. To see Aden and Caden come back for the win, we were really pleased with their effort.”

Buckhannon-Upshur picked up three wins in singles action.

Andrick downed Andrews by an 8-3 score at No. 2, Menendez picked up a hard-fought 9-7 win over Trischler at No. 3 and Phillips bested Evan Stingle by an 8-1 count at No. 4.

“Mauricio played his toughest competition of the year against Trischler,” said Rock “He was battling cramping on the last game of his marathon match but held tough and won the last game to get the win.”

The victory improved the Bucs to 3-0 on the season.

They were slated to play Bridgeport on Wednesday but that game was canceled and will be made up April 27.

The Bucs were scheduled to play at Wheeling Park in a rematch Thursday in Wheeling and will be back in action Saturday hosting Washington.
