Spring cleanup effort removes 3,000 pounds of trash from Buckhannon River

Nineteen volunteers from the Buckhannon River Watershed Association removed 3,000 pounds of trash during a spring cleanup at the River Road Access Site to help preserve the river’s natural beauty and safety.

The Buckhannon River is looking spiffy thanks to the hard work of volunteers from the Buckhannon River Watershed Association (BRWA). On Saturday morning, nineteen community members gathered for a river cleanup initiative, removing 3,000 pounds of trash from the river and its banks.

This initiative at the River Road Access Site, along the Buckhannon River, was part of BRWA’s ongoing mission to protect and preserve the Buckhannon River and its watershed. Volunteers braved unpredictable spring weather with gloves, garbage bags, and determination to keep Upshur County’s waterway clean, safe, and beautiful for all.

“This access site is along the state’s newest Water Trail, the 45 mile Buckhannon and Tygart Valley River Water Trail (btvwatertrail.org). While we dream of creating a paddlers paradise along the Water Trail, we are more than just a group of paddlers. Our volunteers are stewards of the river, and we are here to ensure our river is cared for by the people that use it,” said Jessica Bryzek, AmeriCorps VISTA with the BRWA. “While scouting for a trash clean up location a few weeks ago, we found a Great Blue Heron wading through piles of trash along the banks of the river. Thanks to these volunteers, our heron friend can be healthier and happier now that the trash is removed.”

The Buckhannon River is a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts. Volunteerism opportunities like this ensure the river remains a safe and enjoyable venue for fishing, watersports and witnessing nature’s beauty.

“Trout Lilly wildflowers are also blooming, and now their beauty can be fully appreciated in their trash free, natural habitat. Every piece of trash that is removed preserves the habitat for creatures that call the river home,” Bryzek said.

This clean up effort was part of the state-wide Make It Shine Clean Up sponsored by the WV Department of Environmental Protection REAP program.

BRWA invites anyone passionate about conservation to get involved. Looking ahead, Save the Tygart Watershed Association is hosting a trash clean up next Saturday April 12 at 9 AM at the boat ramp along Arden Grade Road between Arden and Philippi.
