Softball Lady ‘Cats take two at home from Concord

BUCKHANNON, W.Va. – The West Virginia Wesleyan softball team finished the season sweep of Concord on Thursday, defeating CU in both games of their doubleheader at Culpepper Field. The Lady Bobcats run ruled the Mountain Lions in the first game 8-0 and escaped 5-3 in game two. Aces Kendall Stoffel and Hannah Hudson added to their win totals, including Stoffel’s 18th win of the season.

Game 1
Kaitlyn Rizor got the scoring started in the bottom of the second for the Lady Bobcats, singling Alli Robinson home.

Andie Dizon brought her hot stretch into this week, putting Wesleyan up 4-0 with a three-run shot in the bottom of the third. The following inning, Morgan Norris ripped one to left but had to settle for a sacrifice fly to make it 5-0 after four innings. Stoffel took care of business in the top of the 5th, setting up the Lady Bobcat offense in the bottom half of the inning. Rizor closed the game out early with a three-run home run in the bottom of the fifth, ending the game on the mercy rule to take their 40th win of the season.

Rachael Koller and Sarah Thompson had one hit apiece for Concord as Stoffel allowed two hits. Caitlyn Bauer lasted just two-plus innings, taking the loss due to giving up four runs (all earned) on three hits and two walks.

Rizor led the Lady Bobcat offense with two hits and four runs knocked in. Dizon had three RBIs and Norris added one. Stoffel pitched well once again, going five innings and allowing just two hits while striking out five.

Game 2
In the bottom of the third, Wesleyan used an error by the Concord defense to plate the game’s first run.

Concord took the lead in the top of the fifth. A deep drive to the warning track that was dropped allowed Concord to plate two runs as the runners were going with two outs. Wesleyan answered back immediately, putting up a four on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth. Norris hit a two-run home run to dead center as the center fielder had the ball hit off her glove and sneak over the fence. A sacrifice fly from Alyssa Souders and a pinch hit one-run single by Grace Smith made it 5-2.

The Mountain Lions trimmed the lead back down to two with a solo home run in the top of the sixth. Abigail O’Shields put the Mountain Lions down in order in the top of the seventh, securing the 5-3 victory for Wesleyan.

Kylee Stacy had two hits for Concord as Rachael Koller finished with two RBIs. Lorelai Ellerby also added a RBI for Concord. Nancy-Jo Roberts went five innings, allowing five runs (three earned) on eight hits and one walk.

Norris was 3-3 with two RBIs to lead the Lady Bobcats. Smith, Alyssa Souders and Kiley Turner all knocked in one run each. Hannah Hudson secured win number 16, going six innings with three runs (one earned) on six hits and eight strikeouts.
