Softball Lady ‘Cats get split with Concord

BUCKHANNON — As the West Virginia Wesleyan softball team hosted senior day at Culpeper Field on Friday, five seniors were recognized during the second to last home series of the season. Game one was highlighted by dominating pitching on both sides. Kendall Stoffel pitched a five-hit shutout in seven innings to help bring the Lady Bobcats to 1-0 victory. They dropped game two by a 4-2 score.

Game 1

The game only lasted just over 75 minutes as batters were retired fairly quickly. Stoffel collected seven strikeouts and pitched the complete game on 104 pitches. The only run coming across the whole game was in the sixth inning. Gracey Arnold led off the inning ripping a double into the outfield. Emma Jackson singled to right field and put runners on first and third with no outs. Maya Reyes pinch-ran for Jackson and get caught stealing at second. On the same play, Arnold scored on the throw down to second base. That would be the only offense in the game as a close 1-0 victory would lead the Lady Bobcats into game two.

Game 2

Concord came out hot in the first inning scoring all four of their runs in game 2. The scoring started with a two-run fielder’s choice. A ground out would make it 3-0 and a one-run single made it 4-0 after the top of the first. Stoffel reached on an error to score Jenna Gomez and cut into the lead to 4-1 in the bottom of the first.. A one-run single in the bottom sixth from Brooklyn Osburn cut into Concord’s lead making it 4-2. Josi Fix took the loss pitching 2/3rd an inning giving up three earned runs. Kelsi Brown came in relief and pitched 5 1/3 innings allowing no runs and collecting two strikeouts.
