Softball Lady Bucs team tumbles to Parkersburg South but defeats Grafton

PARKERSBURG – The Buckhannon-Upshur softball Lady Bucs split a pair of games in Parkersburg Saturday afternoon.

They lost their opener to host Parkersburg South by a 14-6 score in a five-inning battle but rebounded to knock off Grafton by an 8-7 score in extra innings for their first victory of the young season.

In their opener, Parkersburg South took a 2-0 lead after one inning of play, but B-U responded with three runs in the top of the second behind a two-run home run from Quinn Burnside and a one-run single from Kynnedy Marple.

The lead would be short-lived for the Lady Bucs as Parkersburg South chased across six runs in the bottom of the inning putting B-U down 8-3.

Buckhannon-Upshur kept battling though as Taylor Spratt crushed a two-run home run in the top of the third closing the contest to 8-5, but Parkersburg South countered with a four-run inning in the bottom of the third for a 10-5 advantage.

Buckhannon-Upshur managed a run in the top of the fourth on a one-run single by Alyssa Abel.

Parkersburg South tallied two runs in the bottom of the fourth and the game was called after the top of the fifth on the mercy rule.

B-U managed eight hits in the setback with Marple and Ahel each getting two.

Marple suffered the loss starting the game and going 2 2/3 innings allowing just four earned runs on nine hits while striking out one.

Brylee Hatcher, Brooklin Whitehead and Emma Kuhl all had three hits for Parkersburg South.

Alexi Dellinger tossed all five innings for Parkersburg South giving up five earned runs on eight hits.

Against Grafton, Abel hit a one-run single and later scored on a wild pitch and Burnside hit a one-run single to stake the Lady Bucs to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first.

Grafton tied the game with a three-run outburst in the bottom of the first, but B-U took the lead right back in the top of the second with a pair of runs on a two-run double by Abel.

Grafton scored a run in the bottom of the second and third innings tying the game at 5-5.

Marple scored on a wild pitch in the top of the fourth to return the lead back to the Lady Bucs and Spratt raced home on a passed ball in the top of the fifth treating B-U to a 7-5 advantage.

Grafton tied the game again, this time at 7-7, with two runs in the bottom of the fifth.

With the game going to extra innings, the Lady Bucs took the lead back on a one-run double by Jensen Kimble that scored Marple giving B-U an 8-7advantage.

Kimble, who started the game, set down Grafton batters in order in the bottom of the eighth to preserve the win.

Marple was a perfect four-for-four at the plate while Abel had two hits and drove In three runs.

Kimble picked up the win throwing all eight innings.

She gave up just one earned run on 11 hits while striking out seven.

The Lady Bucs, now 1-2, will play at Lincoln on Monday at 5:30 p.m.
