Soccer Little Bucs win tournament opener over Robert L. Bland, 4-3; Little Lady Bucs lose heartbreaker to Bridgeport on penalty kicks

TENNERTON – The Buckhannon-Upshur Middle School soccer teams both played in their Mid-10 Conference tournament openers Monday night.

The Little Lady Bucs tied Bridgeport 1-1 on the road but after two overtime periods didn’t produce a goal, the game went to penalty kicks which went to Bridgeport by a 3-0 margin.

The Little Bucs hosted Robert L. Bland and went up 2-0 at the half and then held on for a 4-3 victory.

For the Little Lady Bucs, they trailed 1-0 at the half but a goal by Isabella Nottingham tied it up at 1-1. The assist went to Aubrey Shay.

During the penalty kick portion of the game, B-UMS’s first shot was blocked and the next two shots when high while Bridgeport made their first three kicks.

B-UMS owned a 7-4 margin in shots-on-goal

B-UMS keeper Hannah Kelley made two saves.

“It was a hard-fought game,” remarked B-UMS Little Lady Buc head coach Jeff Edmunds. “I am very proud of my entire team.”

The Little Lady Bucs closed out their year with a 6-5-4 record.

For the Little Bucs, Dominic Figueroa tallied two goals while Brody Wright and Brant Mills each had one.

Landon Wright made four saves in the net for the Little Bucs.

“We almost gave up the lead,” noted Buckhannon-Upshur Little Buc head coach Amy Travise.

The win gave the Little Bucs an 11-3-1 mark.

The Little Bucs will now play Washington Irving in the tournament championship Thursday at 6 p.m. at Hite Field.
