Soccer Lady Bucs inch closer to top seed in sectional tournament after 4-0 home win over University

Buckhannon-Upshur defeated University by a 4-0 score Monday night (Bobbie Hatcher/My Buckhannon).

TENERTON – The Buckhannon-Upshur soccer Lady Bucs used a furious second half to pull away from the University Hawks for a 4-0 victory Monday evening in a non-conference game at the high school.

The contest was scoreless at the half, but four different Lady Bucs scored in final 40 minutes to treat Buckhannon-Upshur to a 4-0 victory.

The win didn’t secure the top see for the Lady Bucs in next week’s sectional tournament but puts them in good shape. Bridgeport and University still have to play this Thursday and it appears Bridgeport would have to beat University by five goals to earn the tie-breaker in goal differential. B-U is 2-0-1 in sectional games with a +7 in goal differential while Bridgeport is 1-0-1 with a +3 goal differential.

The victory was the third in a row for head coach Jason Piacente’s team as they have outscored their last three opponents by a 15-1 count.

It was the sixth shutout of the year for Buckhannon-Upshur.

“We played another great game as a team,” remarked Piacente. “Our defense did not give them any space to work and offensively we were connecting passes really well. We controlled the game and finally were able to convert our opportunities in the second half.”

Mallory Hughes started things for the Lady Bucs in the 55th minute when she headed in a corner kick played by Kyleigh Keener.

Seven minutes later, Hannah Boyles found the back of the net playing a cross from Sidney Hollen to give B-U a 2-0 lead.

Grace Queen took a pass from Haley Triplett and scored from the 18 in the 69th minute making it a 3-0 Buckhannon-Upshur advantage.

Hollen put the icing on the cake for the Lady Bucs with an unassisted goal in the 75th minute on a loose ball rebound off University keeper Emily Monti.

The stats were decisively in favor of the Lady Bucs as they owned a 24-1 lead in shots-on-goal and an 8-4 lead in corner kicks.

It was a relatively clean game as both teams were guilty of just two fouls.

B-U keeper Kyndal Davis stopped the only shot she saw while Monti made 20 saves for the Hawks.

University dropped to 6-8-3 on the year while Buckhannon-Upshur improved to 11-5-3.

The Lady Bucs will wrap up their regular season Wednesday hosting Elkins in a Big 10 Conference game.
