Soccer ‘Cats fall in tournament opener to Senators, 3-1

ELKINS — The West Virginia Wesleyan College men’s soccer season came to a close Sunday with a 3-1 first-round loss to Davis & Elkins College in the Mountain East Conference Tournament.

The Senators got on the board first (11:23) when a deep ball was played down the left side to Shemar Daley. Wesleyan goalkeeper James Docherty came out of the net to defend the ball which had not quite made it into the penalty box and Docherty attempted to kick the ball back into the area to collect it. The ball escaped his possession and Daley found an open Johan Magana for the easy score.

The Bobcats’ quickly responded at 15:25 when the ball was stolen at the center stripe by Dillon Rajkovic and pushed 30 yards forward to a hard-charging Chiedozie Ozo-Undeze who beat Senator keeper Dante Ordenes to the left of goal.

The Senators picked up a red card and went down a man when Kendall Pellot’s high boot knocked Erik Rostoen to the ground in the 41st minute.

A second red card was issued six seconds into the start of the second half when a handling error by Louis Willis-Falkiner gave the ball away just outside the 18 to Daley who raced forward to goal. Willis-Falkiner took down Daley inside the box and the red card was given. Dominique Castano scored the penalty shot.

Magana scored the game’s final goal with an assist by Dominique Castano in the 63rd minute.

The Bobcats end the 2024 season with a 4-11-4 overall record and 3-8-3 in the conference.

Dillon Rajkovic was the team’s scoring champion with six goals and four assists for 16 points which placed him 10th on the MEC goal leaders table, 7th in shots and 7th in shots-on-goal. Goalkeeper James Docherty played in 17 games, had 66 saves and had a goals-against-average of 2.06.
