Shreve and Sappey run second and third as XC Lady Bucs take runner-up honors at B-U invitational

Buckhannon=Upshur's Samantha Shreve runs her home course in the B-U Invitational Tuesday at the high school. Shreve finished second overall.

TENNERTON – The duo of Samantha Shreve and Mia Sappey ran second and third to lead the Buckhannon-Upshur Lady Buc cross-country team at their own meet, the Buckhannon-Upshur Invitational, Tuesday evening at the high school.

Shreve owned a time of 22:11.74 while Sappey ran the course in a time of 22:31.70.

Fairmont Senior’s Lydia Falkenstein won the event with a time of 21:15.81.

As a team, Fairmont Senior and Buckhannon-Upshur both amassed 60 points, but Fairmont Senior was declared the winner based on a better average-time score as the Lady Bucs settled for second place in the six-team event.

“I was really proud of how we competed,” stated Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Taylor Stacy. “Even running in a heavy and cold rain at times, our girls threw down some pretty good times. Shreve did a good job of leading the team as always and Sappey was right there behind her. We were able to pull off a second-place finish despite missing some of our top runners.”

Also scoring for the Lady Bucs were Jessica Williams running 11th with a time of 23:32.49 and the Bowers sisters of Pressley running 31st with a clocking of 27:14.72 and Malia placing 33rd with a time of 27:20.19.

The invitational is the lone home meet of the season for the Lady Bucs.

“It was great to run at home and debut our new course in front of family and friends,” stated Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Taylor Stacy. “We’ve got a great community of parents and extended family that support our runners and it was nice to get out there and perform for them.”

The Lady Bucs were supposed to run at Preston on Saturday, but with their athletic department currently shut down right now due to COVID-19 concerns, the team will instead run at Braxton County.
