Ruth May Stewart

Ruth May Stewart, 97, of Buckhannon, passed away on Sunday, December 8, 2019, in the comfort of her home surrounded by her family and under the compassionate of care of WVU Medicine Hospice. 

She was born in Ludlow, Vermont, on February 3, 1922, the daughter of the late Ralph and Betsy Hemenway. Ruth was also preceded in death by her husband, James Albert Stewart; son, James Gilbert Stewart; and daughter, Ellen Christine Stewart Duane; brother, Gilbert Oscar Hemenway.

Ruth graduated Black River Academy in Ludlow, Vermont, before attending cosmetology school in Boston in 1941. Shortly after cosmetology school she married her husband, James Albert Stewart, on July 6, 1942, and they celebrated over 21 years of marriage before his passing on December 23, 1963. She lived in various states such as New York, Vermont and Massachusetts.

Left to cherish Ruth’s memory are her five children: Jacqueline Ruth Dinklocker of Buckhannon, Thomas C. Stewart and wife, Carol, of Liverpool, N.Y., Susan Irene Maley and husband, Steve, of Camden, N.Y., Betsy Lee Burgess and husband, Norm, of Ocean Isles, N.C., and Timothy J. Stewart of Buckhannon.

In keeping with Ruth’s wishes, cremation has been honored.  A Celebration of Life Service will be held at Tomblyn-Clutter Funeral and Cremation located at 21 Elnora Circle in Buckhannon at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, December 10, 2019 with Pastor Ed Lowther officiating.
