One person dead after fire on Turkey Run Road

BUCKHANNON — One person is dead after a house fire on Turkey Run Road early Tuesday morning, according to press releases from the West Virginia State Fire Marshal’s Office and Upshur County Sheriff’s Office.

“On July 23, 2024, the Upshur County 911 Center was alerted to a structure fire in the 2800 block of Turkey Run Road in Buckhannon, West Virginia,” the release states. “Initial units responding to the scene found a single-family dwelling heavily damaged.”

One person was found dead, and deputies secured the scene.

“Deputies from the Upshur County Sheriff’s Office were requested to assist with the incident,” the release states. “One person was found deceased while crews were working to extinguish the fire. Deputies secured the scene until the West Virginia State Fire Marshal’s Office arrived and assumed responsibility for the scene and the ongoing investigation.”

According to the State Fire Marshal’s Office, the victim is believed to be a 54-year-old male who lived alone. He will be transported to the West Virginia Medical Examiner’s Office for autopsy and positive identification.

“Agencies responding to the scene included: Buckhannon Fire Department, Washington District Fire Department, Adrian Fire Department, Upshur EMS and the Warren Districted Fire Department,” according to the release. “This is an ongoing investigation, and any additional questions should be directed to the West Virginia State Fire Marshal’s Office.”

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. This story will be updated as additional information becomes available.
