BUCKHANNON, W.Va. — Jujuan Linzy’s 10-yard touchdown reception with 1:29 left in the fourth quarter lifted West Virginia Wesleyan to its first win of the season with a 27-26 victory over Charleston on Saturday afternoon at Cebe Ross Field.
The Bobcats (1-5, 1-4) triailed 12-6 at the half, but Luke Casey ran for a touchdown and tossed another in the third quarter to put WVWC in front, 20-12. Charleston (4-2, 4-2) answered with a pair of fourth quarter TDs of its own on a D’Andre Brooks TD reception and a Jimmy Wheeler touchdown run to make it 26-20.
WVWC took over with 5:11 to go, Casey engineered the game-winning drive taking the Bobcats 80 yards in seven plays and hitting Linzy with the decisive TD pass. Charleston had a last-gasp effort with :25 seconds left, but a 51-yard field goal attempt missed wide left allowing Wesleyan to run out the clock.
Charleston had the edge in most statistical categories including first downs (32-15), rushing yards (180-63) and passing yards (345-179). However, UC turned it over five times on the day compared to just two for WVWC.
Casey finished the game 11-of-18 for 160 yards with three TDs and one interception. Malcom Cutner had 10 tackles and forced a fumble.
Wheeler had 103 yards rushing and Brett Grisel was 24-of-42 for 285 yards and two touchdowns. Tyreik McAllister (116) and Michael Strachan (111) each had over 100 yards receiving. John Cominsky had seven tackles, including 2.5 tackles for a loss.
UVa-Wise 17, Urbana 0 | Final Stats
URBANA, Ohio — UVa-Wise recorded its first shutout in its NCAA Division II history with a 17-0 win on the road at Urbana on Saturday afternoon.
The Cavs (2-4, 2-4) scored the only points in the first half just before the break as Rondre Knowles-Tener scooped up a fumble and took it 55 yards for a touchdown. Neither team managed a score in the third, and the Cavs added a touchdown and a field goal in the fourth to take the win.
UVa-Wise held Urbana to just 10 first downs and 147 yards of total offense in the win. The Cavaliers also had four interceptions to go with the fumble recovery.
Buster Henderson had a team-high 11 tackles and Marquis Hamilton had a pair of picks and two TFLs to lead the Cavs on defense. Quarterback Tanner Bernard was 16-of-25 for 139 yards and one touchdown to lead the team on offense.
Isaiah Young had 78 yards rushing to lead Urbana (4-2, 3-2). Duray Hall had 17 tackles (nine solo) and broke up a pair of passes.
Shepherd 26, West Liberty 14 | Final Stats
WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. — Shepherd downed West Liberty, 26-14, on Saturday afternoon at West Family Stadium.
The Rams (4-1, 4-1) led 12-7 at the break and traded scores with West Liberty in the third quarter. Shepherd managed to keep West Liberty (2-5, 2-4) out of the end zone in the fourth quarter picking off the Hilltoppers on two of the team’s final three drives in the game. The Rams added a late score to seal the win.
Tyson Bagent was 18-of-31 for 253 yards with four more touchdown passes and one interception. Wanya Allen hauled in two of those TD passes and had 127 yards receiving. Zyan Sturdivant added 73 yards on the ground for SU.
Chrys Lane had eight tackles to lead Shepherd, including one for a loss. Ponce DeLeon had the pair of key interceptions in the fourth quarter.
Brenton Colabella was 18-of-32 for 195 yards passing for WLU. Charles Westbrook was limited to 48 yards on 15 carries and had one touchdown. Cliff Clark racked up 18 tackleso on the day with one sack. Logan Deri had 11 tackles and had an interception.
Glenville State 41, Concord 35 | Final Stats
ATHENS, W.Va. — Glenville State held off a furious fourth quarter rally by Concord and held on for a 41-35 win over the Mountain Lions on Saturday afternoon at Callaghan Stadium.
Trailing 41-15 heading into the fourth quarter, Concord’s Isaiah Bowman scored on back-to-back possessions and then Alec Henderson had a 32-yard interception return for a touchdown to suddenly make it 41-35. CU then forced another punt and took over with 6:20 left in the game. The Mountain Lions were able to drive the ball down to the Glenville State 29-yard line, but couldn’t convert on 4th-and-1 and gave the Pioneers back the ball to finish the game off.
Glenville State (2-4, 2-3) had 530 yards of toal offense, compared to just 265 for Concord. Mario Pender had 212 yards rushing and two touchdowns for the Pioneers. Jaylen McNair was 17-of-26 for 269 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. Dom Cizauskas had nine tackles to lead GSC on defense. Daniel Robinson, Quintavius Twine and Ellis Lilly each had an interception.
Bowman had 101 yards rushing and a pair of TDs. Kris Copeland added another touchdown and 75 yards. Jonathan Roebuck had nine tackles for Concord on defense.
West Virginia State 61, Kentucky State 42 | Final Stats
INSTITUTE, W.Va. — West Virginia State outlasted Kentucky State, 61-42, on Saturday afternoon at Lakin Field.
Calil Wilkins had three rushing touchdowns and 166 yards to lead West Virginia State (3-3). The WVSU defense allowed just four completions to Kentucky State (0-6) and 27 yards through the air. The Thoroughbreds did manage 307 yards rushing and scored a pair of special teams touchdowns to stay in the game.
Faustino Saucedo was 8-of-18 for 103 yards with a touchdown and one interception. Jasper Jude completed his only two pass attempts for 39 yards and had one touchdown. A.J. Barnette had four catches for 79 yards and one touchdown.
Carl Garmon had a 94-yard kickoff return for a touchdown for a WVSU score as well. Aaron Ball hit a pair of field goals, including one from 44 yards out.
Moises Valcarcel had 12 tackles to lead WVSU on defense. Robert Branch added 11 stops, and Joe Stoneman had 10 tackles.
