McGrew had 24 but ‘Cats fall to Charleston, 92-63

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Braeden McGrew scored a game-high 24 points as the West Virginia Wesleyan (2-21, 1-16) men’s basketball team dropped a Mountain East Conference game at Charleston (18-5, 13-4) on Wednesday night at the Wehrle Innovation Center.
 
McGrew’s 24 points were the highest single-game point total in his four-year career at WVWC.
 
WVWC Leaders
Four Bobcats reached double-figure point totals. Joining McGrew was Isaac (Ike) Dove with 12 points, Anthony Craven Jr. with 11 points and Daunte Gardner with 10 points. McGrew added seven boards, four assists and two steals to his final stat line. Craven also pulled down seven rebounds. 
 
Charleston Leaders
Keith Williams led the Golden Eagles with 19 points, shooting 8-for-12 from the field. Tyler Eberhart crashed the glass for eight rebounds and added two blocks. Jeremiah Keene dished out six assists. Shaunn Monroe forced four steals. 
 
Inside the First Half
Pope opened the game with a steal and a score that put WVWC ahead early. UC responded with a six-point scoring run. McGrew’s layup with 16:44 to go put Wesleyan down two points. McGrew drilled a three-pointer that made the score 10-7 in favor of the home team at the first media timeout. 
 
Charleston grew their lead to double-figures after a Shaunn Monroe layup. Dove scored six straight Bobcat points in a span of two minutes and trimmed the UC lead to nine. The Golden Eagles closed out the first half on a 13-0 run. Williams inked 15 first-half points that helped UC build a 46-23 lead at the break.
 
Inside the Second Half
Craven scored Wesleyan’s six first points of the second half. All 11 of Craven’s points came in the second half of action. McGrew’s second three-point bucket of the night put his total up to 12 points with 11:53 to go. McGrew struck again with another three to give him 15 points with nine minutes remaining. 
 
Wesleyan ignited a 9-0 run in less than two minutes, highlighted by scoring from Gardner, Dove and McGrew. UC answered with a six-point run to build a 29 point lead. McGrew scored four points in the final three minutes of action to end his career night. Charleston won their second game in a row by a score of 92-63.
