Charleston, WV – U.S. Senators Joe Manchin (D-WV) and Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV), members of the Senate Appropriations Committee, today announced $1,859,051 from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) for opioid misuse research and treatment programs across West Virginia.
“The drug epidemic has ravaged our state, impacting every West Virginian and taking thousands from us too soon, and the COVID-19 pandemic has only made this crisis worse. This funding supports research and programs that help West Virginians with substance use disorder across the state. As a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee I will continue to fight for funding that helps West Virginia manage the drug epidemic through research and treatment. Together we can manage both crises impacting the Mountain State,” said Senator Manchin.
“The opioid crisis has affected lives and communities across the country, but some states—including West Virginia—have been hit harder than others,” Senator Capito said. “Unfortunately, the current pandemic has brought new challenges for those in recovery and living with addiction, resulting in rising overdoses and treatment needs, which makes these funds even more critical. I’m thankful that HHS recognized the need for further support of these programs in West Virginia and look forward to the impact they will make on the lives of our residents.”
