Lugene Kern Baston

Lugene Kern Baston, 95, of Saint Albans, formerly of French Creek, passed away to be with her Lord and Savior on Tuesday, October 15, 2024, at the Thomas Memorial Hospital Hospice Care West in South Charleston, WV. She was born in Clarksburg, WV, on April 12, 1929, to the late Perry William and Floda Helen Samples Kern.

Lugene was predeceased by all her siblings: William, Donald, Dennis, Paul, and Vance; and special sister-in-law and dear friend, Dorothy Kern.

Her family moved to Akron, OH, when she was fourteen years of age. Lugene attended Garfield High School in Akron, Ohio. During World War 2, while in high school, Lugene was employed as a server at Goumas Greek restaurant. She was later employed at Saalfield Publishing Company.

On March 7, 1948, she was united in marriage in Milwaukee, WI, to her love, Conrad Ernest Baston, who preceded her in death on November 26, 2019. They enjoyed seventy-one years of marriage. To cherish her memory are her surviving children: Constance Diane Baston of St. Albans, Conrad Donald Baston (Shelley) of Big Chimney, and Lucinda Ann Dougherty (Martin) of St. Albans; grandchildren Conrad Russell Baston (Tiffany) of Morgantown and Heather Michelle Hull (Roger) of French Creek; great grandchildren: Sydney Diana, Emma Marie, and Conrad Garrett Baston; and Kylie Paige and Roger Brody Hull; former daughter-in-law and dear friend, Connie Eskew Baston; and dear friend, Geraldine Eskew of French Creek.

Lugene became a homemaker to raise her children while the family resided in Edinburg, Ohio. The family attended Edinburg United Methodist Church. She was a founding member and active in the former Gabby Gals club. She also served as Den Mother for her son’s Cub Scouts pack. She and her late husband were active with the baseball team on which their son participated. They were active with their daughter Constance’s participation in horse shows. Their large front yard served as a softball field for their children and their neighborhood friends. Lugene served as chauffeur for her children and neighborhood friends to the Atwater Starlite Roller Rink for roller skating every Friday evening, as well as to Lake Edinburg for summer swimming lessons.

Lugene and Conrad moved their young family to French Creek in 1964. She worked at home preparing income tax returns and as a bookkeeper for businesses. She was active in her local church, hosting Bible study fellowships in the home, also hosting dinners and picnics. Lugene later also became active with the Republican Women’s club in Buckhannon, and at the State and National level. She enjoyed many vacations with her family to several states and Canada. She was an avid reader. She studied the scriptures from the Bible, using Bible concordances and Christian studies. She completed coursework in Bible through Moody Bible Institute. She also enjoyed reading biographies and non-fiction. She enjoyed listening to gospel and big band orchestra music. She loved and enjoyed her canine babies.

Along with her late husband, Lugene became a member of the Christian Fellowship Church in Buckhannon. They were prolife, strong advocates for the unborn.

The family extends their heartfelt thanks to Palliative Care nurse, Anna, and to the Hospice Care nurses Amanda and Jennifer, CNA Melinda, and social worker Sarah for all the wonderful comforting care they extended to our loving mother, Grandmother, and Great-grandmother. Special thanks to Hospice Chaplain Pete for his ministry to Lugene.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, October 22, 2024, from 11am – 12pm, the funeral hour, at Heavner and Cutright Funeral Chapel, with Pastor Ed McDaniels officiating. Interment will follow in the Rock Cave Cemetery. Following the services dinner will be served in the fellowship hall at Christian Fellowship Church. In lieu of flowers, in memory of Lugene, you may instead donate to a Right to Life organization, Pregnancy Resource Center, Hospice Care, or Christian Fellowship Church.

Online condolences may be extended to the Baston family at www.heavnerandcutright.com. The Baston family entrusted the Heavner & Cutright Funeral Chapel and Cremation Service with the arrangements.
