Lewis, Randolph counties report new COVID-19 deaths Thursday as cases tick up statewide

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources announced Thursday that 8,634 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in the Mountain State. That’s an increase of 165 since the last report.

Locally, COVID-19 cases are active in Upshur (132), Barbour (90), Lewis (72), Randolph (73) and Webster (53) counties. In Upshur County, that’s an increase of 12 active cases in the last 24 hours.

Nineteen additional deaths have been attributed to the disease, according to the DHHR – a 51-year old male from Lewis County, a 55-year old male from Randolph County, a 72-year old male from Wyoming County, a 76-year old female from Kanawha County, an 82-year old female from Kanawha County, a 63-year old female from McDowell County, a 77-year old female from Cabell County, an 83-year old female from Kanawha County, a 73-year old female from Berkeley County, a 69-year old female from Jefferson County, a 55-year old male from Berkeley County, an 81-year old male from Kanawha County, a 53-year old male from Roane County, an 82-year old male from Morgan County, a 71-year old male from Wood County, a 69-year old male from Raleigh County, a 75-year old female from Preston County, a 65-year old male from Nicholas County, and a 63-year old female from Kanawha County.

“The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR) reports as of October 21, 2021, there are currently 8,634 active COVID-19 cases statewide. There have been 19 deaths reported since the last report, with a total of 4,238 deaths attributed to COVID-19,” according to a press release.

About 714 residents are hospitalized with the virus (77% unvaccinated, 23% vaccinated), with 211 currently in intensive care (87% unvaccinated, 13% vaccinated) and 128 on a ventilator (88% unvaccinated, 12% vaccinated). The daily percent positive was 6.58%.

A total of 907,338 people have been fully vaccinated for COVID-19 in West Virginia, meaning they have received both doses of the vaccine, the DHHR said.  That’s about 51% of the state.
