Lewis, Randolph counties report new COVID-19 deaths on Thursday

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources announced Thursday that 781 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in the Mountain State. That’s a decrease of 91 since the last report. 

Locally, COVID-19 cases are active in Upshur (9), Barbour (11), Lewis (6), Randolph (9) and Webster (1) counties. In Upshur County, there was no change in active cases in the last 24 hours. 

Thirteen additional deaths have been attributed to the disease, according to the DHHR – a 65-year old female from Raleigh County, an 82-year old male from Harrison County, a 57-year old female from Berkeley County, a 72-year old female from Clay County, a 48-year old male from Lewis County, a 45-year old male from Harrison County, a 65-year old female from Wyoming County, a 91-year old male from Wayne County, a 73-year old female from Randolph County, a 55-year old male from Cabell County, an 80-year old female from Greenbrier County, an 84-year old female from Wood County, and a 64-year old male from Pocahontas County.

“The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR) reports as of March 17, 2022, there are currently 781 active COVID-19 cases statewide. There have been 13 deaths reported since the last report, with a total of 6,635 deaths attributed to COVID-19,” according to a press release. 

About 255 residents are hospitalized with the virus (62% unvaccinated, 38% vaccinated), with 72 currently in intensive care (61% unvaccinated, 39% vaccinated) and 43 on a ventilator (65% unvaccinated, 35% vaccinated). The daily percent positive was 2.18%. 

A total of 966,071 people have been vaccinated for COVID-19 in West Virginia, the DHHR said.  That’s about 54% of the state. Of those, 417,762 are fully vaccinated and have received their booster dose.
