Lady ‘Cats earn doubleheader sweep over ABU

PHILIPPI, W.Va. – The West Virginia Wesleyan (18-9-1, 8-2 MEC) softball team swept the Alderson Broaddus Battlers (11-17, 2-8 MEC) on Saturday.

Game One

The Lady Bobcats jumped out to an early lead due to defensive mishaps from the Battlers. Alli Robinson doubled to lead off the inning and later advanced to third on a wild pitch. Taylor Swartz cashed her in with a RBI groundout to second base. With two outs in the inning, Kiley Turner and Lauren Niglio reached base by way of an error. WVWC took a 3-0 lead after AB made their third error of the inning on a Grace Hightower ground ball to the shortstop allowing Turner and Niglio to score.

 The Battlers got a run back in the bottom half of the third to make it 3-1. 

The Lady ‘Cats would add three runs in the top of the fourth on singles from Turner, Niglio, and Hightower. Then, Molly Osborne had a two RBI double to make the score 6-1.

Swartz led off the top of the fifth with a double to left field and later scored on a wild pitch. Niglio scored her third run of the game after a Hightower single to left.

Kendall Stoffel (3-3) got the start in game one and recorded her third win of the season. Stoffel surrendered two runs in five innings of work while striking out three Battlers. Abigail O’Shields struck out three in two innings of relief work while not giving up a base hit. 

Game Two

WVWC delivered the first blow again in game two as they scored two runs in its first ab’s. Hightower led the inning off with a single. Two batters later, Robinson doubled down the third-base line scoring Hightower. Swartz followed suit with a double of her own over the centerfielder to plate Robinson. 

The Lady ‘Cats would take a 3-0 lead in the fourth inning when Osborne drew a bases-loaded walk for her third RBI on the afternoon. However, AB responded in the bottom half as they trimmed the deficit to one with a pair of RBI base hits to make it 3-2.

Destiny Alvarado would help bring across the game’s final run as her RBI single to center in the top of the seventh scored Robinson to make it 4-2. 

Hannah Hudson (9-2) threw a complete game to help her record her ninth victory on the season. Hudson gave up two runs on seven hits and struck out five to give the Orange and Black the doubleheader sweep. 

Up Next 

WVWC is back in action on Sunday as they travel to South Euclid, Ohio, to take on Notre Dame College in a doubleheader. Game one will start at noon, with game two starting 30 minutes after completing game one.
