Lady Bucs go scoreless in first quarter in 38-32 setback to Elkins

TENNERTON – It was one of the most inconsistent offensive games you will ever see when the Elkins Tigers visited the Buckhannon-Upshur Lady Bucs Thursday night in a Big 10 Conference clash.

The Lady Bucs were dealt a 38-32 setback.

The Lady Bucs were held scoreless in the first quarter, then put 13 points on the scoreboard in the second quarter only to fall back to five points in the third before scoring 14 points in the fourth quarter.

Elkins was almost as inconsistent, scoring nine points in the first quarter before being held to only two points in the second quarter before erupting for 18 in the third quarter then falling back down to nine for the fourth quarter.

As expected in the low-scoring game, neither team shot the ball particularly well with B-U shooting the ball at 30.7 percent while Elkins was just a tad above that at 31.3 percent.

The positive news coming out of the game for the Bucs is head coach Rob Kittle was back on the bench after missing several games with a medical condition.

Buckhannon-Upshur turned the ball over on their first four possessions of the game and failed to score in the first quarter, going down by a 9-0 margin.

B-U got it going in the second quarter flipping the script and limiting Elkins to just one field goal.

Casadie Lahman nailed a three-pointer for B-U’s first points and she followed that up with a lay-up. Harley Dean made two free throws and Alyssa Abel finished off a 9-0 run with a lay-up, tying the game at 9-9.

Following Elkins’ lone basket of the quarter by Gracelin Corley, coming at the 1:18 mark, Dean and Kyndal Davis wrapped up the first half scoring with a pair of layups giving the Lady Bucs a 13-11 lead at the half.

Buckhannon-Upshur went cold again in the third quarter with just two field goals (one from Dean and Lahman) and one free throw as they gave the lead back to Elkins, at 29-18, heading into the final eight minutes of action.

Abel turned in an old-fashioned three-point play to get the last quarter started, after an Elkins’ basket from Emerson Haddix, Lahman and Dean knocked down a pair of jumpers trimming the Tiger lead down to six, at 31-25, with 5:19 remaining.

B-U couldn’t get any closer than those six points the rest of the way.

Elkins was led by Madeline Belan who scored a game-high 13 points. Corley had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Elkins improved to 13-6 on the year and 8-3 in the Big 10 Conference.

For the Lady Bucs, Lahman had almost half of the B-U offense, ending the night with 15 points as the only B-U player to reach double digits.

The Lady Bucs dropped to 3-14 on the season and 2-9 in the Big 10.

They will be back in action Saturday at Parkersburg South for a 7:30 p.m. non-conference tilt.
