Lady Bucs drop regular-season finale to No. 5 Morgantown, 63-38

TENNERTON – The Buckhannon-Upshur Lady Bucs simply weren’t able to keep up with one of the best teams in the state when they hosted the Class AAAA No. 5 Morgantown Mohigans in their regular-season finale Wednesday.

The Lady Bucs dropped a 63-38 verdict.

Buckhannon-Upshur was able to stay with the Mohigans very early in the game.

Down 11-6, Harley Dean scored on a lay-up and Alyssa Abel put in a free throw making it an 11-9 game with four minutes left in the opening frame. It was as close as the Lady Bucs could get the rest of the contest.

Morgantown ended the final four minutes of the first quarter on a 9-2 run for a 20-11 lead heading into the second quarter.

The Lady Bucs managed two field goals in the second quarter, one by Kyndal Davis and one from Casadie Lahman, and trailed at the break by a 38-15 score.

A pair of free throws from Dean made it a 46-21 game with 5:13 left in the third, but Morgantown went on a 10-0 run for a 56-21 advantage with 3:03 left in the canto.

Abel wrapped up the third quarter with an outside jumper leaving B-U down by a 60-27 score going into the fourth quarter

Morgantown started the final quarter with a trey from Emma Howell, but Mohigan head coach Doug Goodwin called off the attack and Morgantown didn’t score for the remainder of the game.

Buckhannon-Upshur scored the final 11 points of the game.

Kaylie Kellogg hit seven three-pointers and finished the game with 30 points. She was the lone Mohigan to reach double digits.

Morgantown ended their regular season with a 14-7 record.

Abel led the Lady Bucs with 15 points and eight rebounds.

B-U closed out their regular season with a 4-16 mark.

They will begin sectional tournament play at University Wednesday in a 7 p.m. contest.
