TENNERTON – The Buckhannon-Upshur Lady Bucs had a solid start to their game with John Marshall, but simply ran out of gas at the end and suffered a 67-52 defeat Saturday evening.

The Lady Bucs built a 13-8 lead after the first quarter but were outscored by a 59-39 score the rest of the way.

“John Marshall wasn’t a good match-up with us from the start with their height,” stated Buckhannon-Upshur interim coach Chad Wilfong. “We laid an egg after that first quarter, but I am still happy with how we battled to the end.”

B-U was down early 3-2 two minutes into the game, but a 5-0 run behind a free throw and a baseline jumper from Alyssa Abel and a lay-up from Casadie Lahman gave the Lady Bucs a 7-3 lead with 3:21 left in the opening quarter.

Up 7-6, a short jumper from Kyndal Davis, a lay-up from Abel and a baseline jumper from Lahman extended the B-U lead to 13-6 and they took a 13-8 lead into the second quarter.

John Marshall tied the game up with a 5-0 run to start the second quarter before Lahman scored on a lay-up returning the lead back to B-U, at 15-13, with 90 seconds gone in the second.

It was the last time B-U held the lead.

A lay-up by Lahman kept the Lady Bucs down by just one, at 22-21, but Buckhannon-Upshur went into the break down by a 28-24 score.

Abel scored on a baseline jumper to begin the third quarter, but John Marshall responded with a 9-0 run for a 37-26 advantage.

Down 39-28, Brooklyn Smith canned a nine-footer and Lahman uncorked a three-pointer making it a 39-33 score with 2:36 left in the quarter.

John Marshall closed the quarter with a 9-4 run putting the Lady Bucs down by a 48-37 score heading into the fourth quarter.

John Marshall scored the first five points of the final quarter before Harley Dean fired in a three-pointer for the Lady Bucs leaving them down by a 53-40 score.

A 7-0 run by John Marshall made it a 60-40 score but B-U countered with an 8-0 run behind a trey from Hodge’Nay Henderson and five straight points from Abel closing it to a 60-48 contest with 2:58 remaining.

B-U couldn’t get any closer than those 12 points the rest of the way.

Rilee Storm and Kaylie Derrow led John Marshall with 25 and 24 points respectively.

John Marshall improved to 12-8 with the win.

Abel paced the Lady Bucs with 17 points while Lahman had a double-double with 12 points and 10 assists. Dean also reached double digits with 11 points and grabbed a team-high six rebounds.

The loss dropped the Lady Bucs to 3-12 on the year.

They will be back in action at Lewis County on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
