Lacrosse Lady Bucs look strong in 2-0 start after wins against Capital and Wheeling Park

TENNERTON – With high expectations this year, the 2022 Buckhannon-Upshur Lady Buc lacrosse season couldn’t have started out any better.

How well did it start? Try outscoring their first two opponents by a combined 50-2 score.

The Lady Bucs opened their season on the road Friday night in Charleston with a 27-0 blanking of the Capital Cougars and then followed that up Saturday afternoon at home with a 23-2 blowout win over the visiting Wheeling Park Patriots.

“These were two good wins to start the season,” stated Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Jamie Greene. “Capital is rebuilding a little bit and Wheeling Park is improving, but we really played well offensively and defensively. The two games also allowed us to get a lot of younger players in which help us down the road.”

Against Wheeling Park, the Lady Bucs took a 17-0 lead at the half and scored 10 more times in the second half for their 27-0 win.

Hannah Walton led the team offensively with eight goals while Miranda Greene scored four and Reese Hutson and Heather Hayes each had three.

Greene had a team-high four assists and seven ground balls.

Haylea Crihfield played 35 minutes in net and made one save while Emma Corder had 15 minutes in the net and didn’t see a shot.

In their win over Wheeling Park, the Lady Bucs built a 15-2 lead at the break and shutout the Patriots in the second half while scoring eight goals.

Greene led the squad with nine goals while Walton and Kendall Defibaugh each had four.

Defibaugh had three assists in the win and Greene had a team-high nine ground balls.

Crihfield had one save in 40 minutes of net time while Corder didn’t see a shot in 10 minutes of action.

“The girls are having fun and are starting to click and work together and that is what I want to see,” remarked Greene.

Senior Miranda Greene agreed with the assessment of her head coach that teamwork helped the Lady Bucs succeed in their first two games.

“I think teamwork, commutation and working around the ball allowed us to be successful in these first two games,” said Miranda Greene. “It feels amazing to start the season 2-0. We just want to keep building on our good start to the season. I am really proud of our team and hope we can keep this going.”

The Lady Bucs (2-0) will be back in action at home Wednesday hosting Harrison County at 6 p.m.

“Harrison County is a scrappy team and then we have to get ready for Morgantown after that,” concluded Jamie Greene. “We will be ready.”
